Downtown offers a lifetime of educational opportunities,
from infancy through adulthood with daycare centers, primary
and secondary schools, a community college and an innovative
center for higher education.
Along with the fact that Dallas has one of the most educated
workforces of the largest metropolitan areas in the nation:
- 40% of Downtown employees are college graduates and an
additional 16% earned post-graduate degrees.
- 36% of Downtown area residents, 25 years and older, are
college graduates and another 20% earned post-graduate degrees.
Facilities
- First Baptist Academy, established in 1972 as a co-educational
Christian college preparatory school, serves almost 700
students from kindergarten to Grade 12 at its Downtown campus.
- Pegasus Charter School, an open-enrollment school located
at the Downtown YMCA, opened in 1997 with a rigorous curriculum
of liberal arts and sciences for grades 7-12.
- Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and
Visual Arts is a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon school
located in the Dallas Arts District. It offers magnet students
an enriched curriculum of music, theater, art and dance.
- One of seven Dallas County Community College District
campuses, El Centro offers two-year degrees, training through
one- and two-year applied programs, job training, retraining
and special interest courses. Fields of study range from
business to health professions to hospitality. In fall
2004, the college opened a new 26,800 square foot
two-story student and technology center. Over 5,900 students
are enrolled at El Centro.
- Universities Center at Dallas serves approximately 1,500
students each semester, offering classes, programs and degrees
from Midwestern State University, Texas A&M-Commerce, Texas
Woman's University, The University of Texas at Dallas, The
University of Texas at Arlington and the University of North
Texas. Weekday evening and Saturday classes are available
in fifteen programs, including business, higher education,
health care administration and real estate development.
