FOUNDER’S
SQUARE PARK RENOVATIONS COMPLETE
 |
On
April 23 at noon, DOWNTOWNDALLAS
and the City of Dallas Park and Recreation
Department held a celebratory ribbon cutting
to signify the completion of over a year’s
worth of renovations to Founders Square
Park. Speaking at the event were Council
Member Angela Hunt; Dan Blizzard, Chairman
of the Board of DOWNTOWNDALLAS;
John F. Crawford, President & CEO of
DOWNTOWNDALLAS; and Willis
Winter, Assistant Director of City of Dallas
Park and Recreation.
|
Founders
Square Park was constructed over 25 years ago
and was in desperate need of renovation. Therefore,
with DOWNTOWNDALLAS’ mission
to make the area more attractive and improve the
quality of life for visitors, residents, and employees,
in 2006 the organization’s Capital Improvements
Committee approved funding for the renovation
of the landscape and hardscape at Founders Square
Park. Renovations began in July of 2007 and were
complete in February of 2008.
Representatives from DOWNTOWNDALLAS,
City of Dallas Park and Recreation and Founders
Square Building ownership were involved in the
renovation, which cost over $300,000. DOWNTOWNDALLAS
contributed $225,000, Founders Square Building
contributed $25,000 and City of Dallas Park and
Recreation contributed over $50,000. In addition,
all parties involved dedicated countless hours
of staff time and in-kind services for the project.
“Renovating Founders Square Park is another
way DOWNTOWNDALLAS is working
to provide more recreation and greenspace for
Downtown residents, employees and visitors,”
said John F. Crawford, President and CEO. “No
great city exists without parks, and together
with the City of Dallas we are determined to ensure
we rank in the top echelon.”

DOWNTOWN EVENTS RECAP
|
On
April 5th, over 500 of Dallas’ best
heeled made their way through the streets
of Downtown at the Neiman Marcus’

raised over $500,000 for the American Heart

 |
The
AFI Dallas International Film Festival
brought stars, world-class movies, and throngs
of moviegoers to Downtown for the week long
festival. The festival wrapped up its second
year with a 60% spike in attendance proving
that Dallas will be a staple in the international
film festival trail. |
|
EarthFest
lured over 1,000 Downtown workers, residents
and visitors out of their offices and onto
the streets on April 18th for a good cause.
Over 75 teams embarked across the Districts
to work together to beautify the area they
live, work and play. Projects included planting
flowers, painting over graffiti and disposing
of litter. |
|
The
first annual DERT Conference
was a huge success with over 450 people
attending the conference. The conference
included indoor and outdoor displays of
emergency response equipment and services.
Conference attendees learned about the role
of both the public and private sector in
the case of a critical incident within the
City of Dallas. While a majority of the
attendees were from the City of Dallas,
representatives from over 20 cities around
the Metroplex attended the conference. |

BOOKER
T. WASHINGTON STUDENTS RETURN TO A RENOVATED CAMPUS
 |
One
of Downtown’s gems, the Booker T. Washington
School for the Performing and Visual Arts finally
completed its facelift in time for students to conclude
their school year in their refurbished and expanded
$55 million school. The original building was gutted
and now houses an art gallery, theater and a museum
to display school and alumni memorabilia. A new
170,000-square-foot facility extends behind the
old school, providing added space for students who
were once accustomed to periodically attending class
in the hallways. The historic original building
will retain the Booker T. Washington name, but the
new facility will be known as the Harmon Arts Magnet,
in honor of Dallas philanthropist Nancy Harmon,
who contributed $10 million to the project. |

UNIVERSITY
OF PENNSYLVANIA TEAMS WINS ULI COMPETITION FOCUSING ON CEDARS
/ SOUTH SIDE DISTRICT
A
team from the University of Pennsylvania was selected
for creating the winning scheme in the sixth annual Urban
Land Institute Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition.
The team’s winning entry, “Belleview Place,”
captivated jury members with its innovative approach to
integrating the Cedars / South Side neighborhood to Downtown,
and its use of ground leases to retain public ownership
of land to allow for a change of uses in the future.
The
annual competition is open to graduate students who are
pursuing real estate-related studies at a North American
University. Created in 2002, the ULI Hines competition
has been funded in perpetuity through a $3 million endowment
from urban development pioneer Gerald D. Hines, chairman
and owner of the Hines real estate organization. The winning
team is selected by a jury of renowned real estate development,
architecture, urban planning and design experts from across
the world.

CITY
OF DALLAS INTRODUCES DOWNTOWN MORTGAGE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The City of Dallas
recently introduced a homeownership incentive program for
the Central Business District that intends to increase the
vitality by encouraging mixed-income homeownership. Down
payment and closing cost assistance will be provided to
create more affordable housing opportunities to low to moderate-income
households. Borrowers earning 80% or less of the Dallas
area median family income may be eligible to obtain a second-lien
loan of up to $40,000. The loan isn’t required to
be repaid but, instead, the property unit will remain deed
restricted upon sale of the property.
