Capital Improvements

Downtown Dallas, Inc. (DDI) works to improve the physical environment and appearance of Downtown by spearheading many unique and highly visible projects. TheDowntown Dallas, Inc. Capital Improvements Committee, chaired by Brian Bergerson with Spectrum Properties, is comprised of a group of Downtown stakeholders with a passion for improving the quality of life in Downtown by identifying projects that improve the public appearance of Downtown.

Capital Improvements projects and programs provided by Downtown Dallas, Inc. include:

  • Matching Grants Program —DDI provides hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to Downtown property owners for public improvement projects.  DDI matches dollar for dollar (maximum of $25,000) for construction costs of approved projects. Over the program’s lifespan, over $2.2 million has been granted, leveraging more than $11 million in private investment Downtown.
  • Downtown Parks Renovation and Construction — DDI partners with Dallas Park and Recreation on park renovation projects, new park development, park management and park maintenance. Demonstrating this commitment to greenspace, we announced a donation of $1.25 million in 2007 for the development/renovation of five Downtown Parks.
  • Downtown Wayfinding System — DDI led the effort and providedthe funds to implement a new signage system, making it easier for Downtown workers, visitors and residents to find districts and destinations in Downtown Dallas. Installation of over 200 signs was completed in 2007 and an additional 200 signs are scheduled to be installed in 2009.
  • Streetscape Projects — DDI with the City of Dallas work to identify, design and manage many sidewalk improvement projects throughout all of Downtown including the North-South Streetscape projects on Field, Akard, Ervay, St. Paul and Harwood; Main Street Streetscape between Akard and Ervay; Elm Street Streetscape between Akard and Ervay (in progress); Main Street Streetscape between Harwood and Good Latimer (in progress); and many additional projects to come in the near future.
  • Gateway Enhancements — Over the years, DDI has completed several projects to improve the appearance of major entrances into Downtown by installing reflective, decorative panels on freeway support columns, decorative painting of overpasses and planting landscape enhancements. Recently, DDI cleaned up the Woodall Rogers underpasses at Field and Routh Streets by power washing and painting all of the support columns and seal coating all of the asphalt below the underpasses.
  • MATA Extension — DDI has provided support and $200,000 for extending the McKinney Avenue Trolley along Olive Street from McKinney Avenue to the DART light rail at Cancer Survivors Plaza.
